NAIAS Preview: Toyota FT-HS Sports Concept

You might want to sit down before fainting over a Toyota. This year, Toyota will present its FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept which will be a super car powered by a 3.5-L V6 engine with more than 400 horsepowers working together with a hybrid powertrain with a 0-60 time of around 4 seconds.

Although a mere concept, what you see here will certainly be what you get at the Detroit auto show. The FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept that will unveil at the NAIAS will be the size of a Lexus SC430, except wider. There will also be room for 4 passengers. The engine will be visible through a hole in the hood, similar to that of the Audi R8, where the engine is visible through a piece of glass.

Inside, the aggressive design from the outside is carried onto the interior, which has sharp edges throughout the cabin. Yes, it may look cool in the pictures, but the question really is: will this ever be made into production? Kevin Hunter, VP of the Calty Design Research reports that the price tag will fall in the mid $30,000 range, which is not too shabby.

When upgrading your Honda Civic, there are three basic things most people would like to do to gain performance, style, and looks. The first is a body kit. Next, most people want to add personalization to the interior. Last, we want to talk about engine modifications. These upgrades you may want to do in any particular order, depending on your personality. I started with my engine. I want my car to be a “sleeper”. When I add a body kit, then I’ll have the muscle to back it up. But it all depends on you. Let’s start with the body kit for your Honda Civic.

If you have a pre-1988 Honda Civic, body kits were made, but they are hard to find. There really wasn’t much of an internet, so the market was limited to larger cities or

Japan. Today, you could search for a used Mugen kit and probably find one on the internet. For later Civics, there are a couple of good choices. Stillen and Greddy offer quality components.

When purchasing bargain components, remember you may have to modify the kit for proper alignment. For example, the exhaust may not be exactly in the right spot. Rework time to your Civic may end up costing you as much as a higher quality kit. I’ve looked at the kits you can buy a piece at a time due to my budget. Adding the front air dam to keep the car on the ground, side skirts and a rear valance all at once can be a little imposing on the pocketbook. Interior modifications may not impress anyone as you drive down the street, but if the car looks good on the outside, you’ll want that Civic sharp on the inside. A torn seat or other imperfections are a good place to start. Most people start with the radio. But if you have a newer Civic or Accord and the radio is already pretty good, what can you do to add your own style? Add some gauges. You can add a pillar mount gauges the A-frame that supports the roof. A company called Lotek makes nice gauge pods.

When you add the gauges, now you have interior style and you can keep better check on your motor instead of relying on a red warning light. The first thing to do is get a free flowing intake. Not only do these look good in the engine compartment, but also they help the car breath better. There are several to choose from, but I’m biased towards K & N Products. They fit perfectly and are completely washable. Be warned, you can here the engine breathing when you hit the gas! It’s so cool!

Ferrari revealed today the first images and official details of the 2009 California, the latest addition to the new generation of Ferraris launched in 2004 with the 612 Scaglietti and added to more recently with the 430 Scuderia.

The California will be powered by a new V8 engine mounted for the first time in the marque’s history in the mid-front position. The engine develops 460 CV at 7,500 rpm with a torque curve that enhances vehicle dynamics and provides maximum driving pleasure which is typical for Ferrari.

As per the traditional Ferrari transaxle layout, the engine, which allows the Ferrari California to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4.0 seconds, will be coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission that boosts the car’s performance while enhancing the driving pleasure, improves ride comfort and reduces fuel consumption and emissions (c.310 g/km CO2).

California will make its world debut this autumn at the Paris Motor Show, but more details will be unveiled in the upcoming weeks.

The Tata Nano: how did they do it?

The Tata 1 Lakh Car was unveiled recently and it was given the name Tata Nano. We know its small, egg-like and comes with a small two-cylinder engine, but what exactly did Tata do to achieve the now famous “1 Lakh” price?

• Base 1-lakh model has no radio, power steering, power windows or air conditioning.
• Instrument panel only has the basics - speedometer, odometer and fuel gauge.
• Its 12 inch wheels only need 3 lug nuts.
• Small 12 inch tyres are cheaper because they use less material.
• The 624cc two-cylinder gasoline engine only has a single balance shaft.
• Does not pass US emission or safety standards.
• Bosch’s 35 amp generator is lighter than the usual 40 amp model.
• Bosch used a motorcycle starter motor.
• Bosch Value Motronic ECU removes 700 of the Motronic’s 1,000 functions, and the chip and housing itself has been shrinked.
• ECU sensors are smaller and lighter and fewer - 4 instead of the usual 7 or 8.
• Throttle position sensor is half its usual size because the pressure plate uses more sensitive material.
• It looks like a hatch but isn’t a hatch - the rear is welded shut and cannot be opened, this means the engine bay which lies under the rear seats also can only be accessed from inside the car.
• Drum brakes all-round instead of front discs.
• The basic 1-lakh model does not even come with a brake booster or servo.
• Reduced NVH materials, instead sheet metal frequencies were designed to control boom and vibration.
• Seats have a built in headrest and do not recline.
• No glovebox.

Rumours are building of a Mercedes supercar to rival the forthcoming R8 from Audi.
